Gothic tattoo designs have become one of the most popular designs in tattoo art. It has become prevalent even outside the alternative subculture, mainly those who can appreciate the beauty of its darkness and romanticism.
In general, gothic tattoo designs are popularized by the gothic scene as these people have an inclination to dark fashion, body piercing and tattoos. Their very eclectic style is a symbolism of their imaginative preoccupation with the dark side of the human psyche usually morbid, tragic and romantic as seen also with their preference in music and fashion. This style has set its own trend in tattoo artistry and has become popular with tattoo enthusiasts, but what really makes a tattoo gothic? What is it about gothic tattoo designs that make them popular even today?
In history, the gothic subculture emerged in the United Kingdom during the late 1970s and early 1980s. Its roots can be traced to a certain musical style specifically rock exploring death, dark romanticism, and the occult which was then labeled as gothic; hence the term gothic rock. This musical genre is known for its celebration of the darker side of life (usually death), and since then, has diversified into many other styles ranging from death rock/punk, medieval/renaissance, occult and mysticism.
Today, the gothic subculture has also influenced different visual artists (photographers and painters) with its mystical and romantic elements, making it a popular art piece for tattooing. These gothic body arts characteristically portray the dramatic use of bold lines using dark colors (usually black) into intricate lines and curves with occasional bursts of red, white, and purple. There are also many different designs to choose from since gothic tattoo designs are very diverse and reflect the various tastes of people in this subculture. These designs are usually classified depending on the general imagery used. Some of these typical images are classified into 2 categories namely gothic fantasy/mythological art and occult tattoos associated with white witchcraft.
Some of the most popular fantasy art are fairies, dragons, angels, winged creatures, mermaids, unicorns and vampires. These designs usually represent the beliefs of the people in the medieval times when mythological creatures supposedly abound. Popular occult tattoos, on the other hand, are the Tarot, pentacle, athame, evil eye, ankhs, and Viking Runes. These images are usually related to pagan and Wiccan practices.
Although these images oppose Christian beliefs, they are not evil. Paganism also existed during the medieval times when nature was revered, and fantastical creatures live in people’s imagination. Goths and normal people alike are simply drawn to its dark mystical world, and celebrate these magical images through beautiful and mysterious gothic tattoo designs.
